GORE® Cover

Rental coverage - technically up to date & easy to handle

The GORE® Cover System makes it possible to control odours and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, among other things. The compost heap is covered and sealed off from the ground so that it is physically sealed off from the outside.

High-tech membrane cover from GORE®

By using this system a highly functional cover is drawn over the compost heap including a three-ply membrane consisting of two high-class fabrics resistant against UV radiation and a water-tight and breathable semipermeable membrane (GORE© Cover).

The membrane safely protects the decomposition body against weather impacts and rainwater moistening. From the inside it keeps back odours, dust, germs and bacteria but is permeable for air and moisture.

Due to the special membrane properties of GORE® Cover for effective control of odours and emissions, a biofilter system is not necessary.

A climate is generated under the membrane that is needed by micro-organisms to decompose organic wastes in high-class compost as fast as possible.

The GORE© Cover membrane can be very easily spread over the rental unit and removed again, for example for moving, using rotary modules to attach the tarpaulin to the side walls and tarpaulin wrapping devices.

GORE® Cover –
Functions

1. side wall

Allows more material to be treated in a consistently small area and the GORE® Cover to be attached airtight.

2. oxygen sensor

Continuously measures the oxygen content in the rental property

3. weather conditions

The GORE® Cover means that the rotting material is virtually free from the effects of the weather. Rain, snow and hail cannot penetrate the material, and it is also protected from wind and sunlight.

4. vaporisation

The semi-permeable membrane allows water vapour to escape.

5. temperature sensor

Continuously measures the temperature in the rental property.

6. rental body

Offers variable rental volumes (360-1000 m3) depending on rental length (20-50m).

7. aeration

If the oxygen content falls below the minimum level, the fan is activated and air is forced into the material.

8. drainage

Leachate can be drained and collected via the channel system.

9. air distribution

More air is pressed into the rental than can escape through the GORE® Cover. The resulting overpressure distributes the air and temperature evenly throughout the material.

10. pressure sensor

The daily inspection round is no longer necessary thanks to process monitoring by iCompost in conjunction with a pressure sensor. You save working time and you can be sure that the aeration system works fine.

11. emission retention

See facts and figures

The GORE® Cover has a three-layer structure: The top layer serves as protection against external mechanical and weather influences. It is tear-resistant and the colouring provides additional UV protection.

This is followed by the semi-permeable ePTFE membrane, which gives the GORE® Cover its odour, emission and bacteria-retaining function.

Underneath the membrane is another protective layer, which is designed to prevent damage caused by the rotting material and therefore extend the service life of the cover.

We are glad to be able to provide interested clients or institutes our technology in form of a reliable, fully functional, mobile test unit. It fits in the smallest version on a trailor including aeration unit, pipes. cover und control (WLan).

So you can carry out some trials – for example with different input materials – and see by means for the results if the compost produced with the UTV technlogy meets your expectations.

Frequently asked questions about the GORE® Cover

GORE® Cover

  • What are the advantages of the GORE® Cover (membrane cover) for compost heaps?

    • Suitable for all types of organic waste
    • low costs (BIFA study confirmed): minimal operating costs & low construction and engineering costs
    • significant odor reduction & reliable reduction of emissions
    • short process duration (8 weeks to rotting degree V)
    • simple operation & handling
    • short construction approval as an enclosed system (BAT)
    • short planning & installation time
    • modularly expandable for maximum flexibility
    • Can be rented and tested
    • Can be used in almost any climatic zone (functional from -30 degrees - +60 degrees)
    • Contribution to climate protection
  • How does the membrane cover with GORE® Cover reduce emissions?

A number of technical details in this composting system contribute to the efficient reduction of emissions. However, the central point in the overall concept is the semi-permeable membrane cover, whose extremely fine pores do not allow large molecules such as odorous substances or bioaerosols to pass through. In addition, the odorous substances condense on the inside of the membrane cover above the compost heap, drip back into the heap and are decomposed there by microorganisms. Several studies confirm the comparability of the reduction of bioaerosols and odors to enclosed composting systems.

  • Can the cover be compared with a closed, enclosed system?

UTV technology stands between open windrow composting and closed housing and combines the advantages of both systems. It is similarly simple and flexible as open windrow composting, but offers the same controlled composting conditions as a complex closed system thanks to the membrane cover. In many countries it is approved as a closed system.

  • What are the cost benefits of a composting plant with a membrane cover?

A membrane cover is cheaper and more flexible than concrete. The demand-controlled and optimized ventilation requires minimal power and energy consumption. For comparison: the power consumption of a fan is only in the order of magnitude of a good hairdryer.

  • How long does it take to install the composting system?

Normally, this technology can be set up anywhere in the world within 6 to 12 weeks.
