The project in Tunisia, led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT, has successfully completed the final phase of its multi-year project to improve waste management in Tunisia. The aim was to improve cleanliness, waste treatment and local value creation in the three Tunisian model regions of Siliana, Tabarka and Douar Hicher / Tunis. Over the course of the three-year project, the following measures were implemented on the ground: the creation of a recycling island per municipality, the acquisition of a complete composting plant and the expansion of a treatment plant for waste electrical and electronic equipment.
The hinterland of Tabarka, which is otherwise dominated by tourism, is characterised by agriculture. The proportion of organic waste is therefore estimated at 70 per cent. In future, the separately collected organic waste should no longer end up in landfill sites, but can be processed into valuable fertiliser after appropriate treatment. This is made possible by the composting plant we built for the municipality of Tabarka. Since the plant's inauguration in 2022, it has successfully composted 2,000 tonnes of green waste annually.
